TOP 10 FOOD LIARS
Yes, I know that food cannot actually “Lie” to us, but this was a catchy way of describing the top ten foods that people think are healthy, but are not. This list may also include ways that we
make a healthy food unhealthy.
1. CANOLA or VEGETABLE OIL or SOYBEAN OIL All three of these oils are TOXIC to the body. Although Canola oil is widely promoted as a healthy oil, there are many untold dangers to this oil and other vegetable oils that are similarly processed and developed. (such as soybean oil) Much of the canola grown is genetically modified and processed so that it is “roundup ready” or BT tolerant. This means that it can survive the high levels of roundup (GE pesticides and herbicides) put on the crops before harvesting. Plant sourced oils like Canola, vegetable and soybean oils are also used industrially to formulate lubricants, oils, fuels, soaps, paints, plastics, cosmetics and ink. So this is what you are cooking with and consuming in many processed foods you eat. CHECK THOSE LABELS FOR PARTIALLY AND/OR HYDROGENATED OIL IN ADDITION TO LOOKING FOR CANOLA OIL AND SOYBEAN OIL AND VEGETABLE OIL
2. ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS I can remember the first time I ever saw an artificial sweetener tablet. I was about 6 years old and it was in a bottle with a prescription label on it that my mother had gotten from her doctor to help her lose weight. I tasted one and it was awful. But that’s about the time the artificial sweetener phase started and it has gone crazy since. The craziest part is that you find a multitude of artificial sweeteners from all these trustworthy companies that tell you they are safe; when in actuality, we are the lab rats for the testing to see what really happens to the human body when we put these chemicals in our bodies. Nutra Sweet, Aspartame, Sucralose, Equal, Truvia, etc are all toxins in the body. Many tests have been done and are conclusive that these sweeteners were never meant for human consumption and cause cancerous tumors, along with a host of health issues caused by the body’s inability to break down and process these toxic chemicals. READ UP ON THIS AND DON’T FORGET ALL THAT GUM YOU ARE CHEWING!! GET GUM MADE WITH “ONLY” XYLITOL OR STEVIA.
3. SALAD DRESSING SOLD OFF A SHELF. If you can find even one salad dressing that does not have canola oil, vegetable oil or soybean oil as it’s first ingredient; I will be amazed. I mention this because so many of us are trying to do the right thing by eating more raw healthy greens, and then we top it with an unhealthy salad dressing. The best way to dress your salads is with vinegar and oil (I love balsamic vinegar) or even make your own salad dressings. I get my recipes online. There are so many ways to make your own fun and creative dressings that I would encourage you to make it fun and do a big fun salad that goes along with the theme of your dinner. Example: If you are doing a stir fry with rice for dinner, do a salad with almonds and mandarin oranges in it with a peanut Tai salad dressing. The family will love your creativity and you will feel great that the meal is healthy! IF YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO, ORGANIC DRESSINGS ARE BETTER BUT THEY
STILL HAVE CANOLA OIL. ACCORDING TO ORGANIC CERTIFICATION REGULATIONS IT HAS TO BE PROCESSED IN A HEALTHY WAY WITH NO GMOS.
4. ICEBERG LETTUCE Ok, Now before all you iceberg lettuce lovers start hating me for this let me just give you some info and some ideas on how to make iceberg a little more nutritional. Iceberg lettuce is not really lying to you, it’s just really not full of the healthy nutrients that we associate with eating a salad. If you are in fact eating a salad for it’s nutritional benefits, I recommend that you mix in some romaine and mixed greens so that you can benefit more from it. The amount of Vitamin K, Lutein, and even fiber is so low in iceberg, you might as well just drink a glass of water for lunch. The water might actually do you more good. IF YOU NEED TO ADJUST TO THIS CHANGE MAKE YOUR FIRST SALAD MOSTLY ICEBERG WITH A LOT OF ROMAINE AND A LITTLE MIXED GREENS. ADJUST EACH TIME UNTIL IT IS MOSTLY MIXED GREENS. WE ALL NEED MORE RAW GREENS!
5. YOGURT/ GO-GURTS/ KEFIR DRINKS SOLD IN STORES This one actually cracks me up! I’m sorry to let you know that your sugary/fruity (every flavor in the world now) yogurt that you eat is NOT healthy or good for you. The only live cultures left in it by the time it gets to the store are the ones the manufacturer put in it themselves. There is as much or more sugar in one of these yogurts than there is in a can of soda. If it says it’s low sugar or sugar free than it probably has toxic artificial sweeteners in it. Most of these yogurt products have been so over-pasturized and processed to the point that there is no real digestible protein in them. If it is low fat or no fat then it is really bad. ( I will elaborate on this in number 6) The only recommended healthy form of yogurt would be if it is still raw from a local farmer who has healthy grass-fed cows or if it is organic and in it’s whole form. I always check the amount of sugar it has to make sure it’s less than
10 grams. JUST REMEMBER, ALL THESE SUGARY TASTING FOODS ARE CREATING FOOD ADDICTIONS IN OUR CHILDREN.
6. LOW FAT DAIRY PRODUCTS I could probably write a whole article on how selective you need to be on all dairy products you buy in this country because it is the culprit for many of our most popular diseases. At the same time, dairy used to be one of the most powerfully healthy foods we could consume. All that has changed since small farmers sold off to large manufacturing. So the issue with Milk, cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese, creamed cheese, etc… is making the best choice possible. Ever since the Low-fat craze started in the early 90s, people have made whole fat items to be the culprit of all of our health problems in this country. Truth is, I still prefer to not consume a lot of dairy unless I can get it raw from healthy grass fed cows, but the dairy I do let my family eat
has to be organic and it has to be in it’s whole form. I am only going to list one reason why I never eat 1 percent or 2 percent or low fat cheese or milk or yogurt. The reason why is because our bodies are unable to process and break down these dairy foods unless they are still in their whole form. Even whole milk is not that great because they still skim off the cream and use it for other dairy items and they add back in fat to make it whole, but I do the best I can do. Our family eats whole dairy products. IF YOU ARE CONCERNED ABOUT WEIGHT GAIN, JUST TAKE OUT ALL PROCESSED FOODS FROM YOUR DIET (AND YOUR FAMILY’S DIET) AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS NO MATTER HOW MUCH FAT YOU EAT. I DARE YOU TO TRY THIS!!
7. GRANOLA AND CEREAL AND CEREAL BARS This one is pretty easy. As far as cereal goes, it’s a grain and all grains (unless live sprouted) process into sugar in the body. So for all  of you eating that sugar the first thing every morning, you are setting yourself up for diabetes. What a thing to do to the body each day: put a bunch of grains that process into sugar into the body causing the pancreas to secrete a bunch of insulin in order to keep it out of the blood stream. Start your day with a healthy protein like eggs or a healthy protein shake in the morning. Just read the ingredients on those cereal bars and granola bars. Really?! IF YOU MAKE COMMERCIALS YOUR FORM OF EDUCATION FOR YOURSELF AND YOUR FAMILY…..YOU WILL HAVE SOME SERIOUS HEALTH ISSUES!!!
8. WHEAT BREAD/ WHOLE GRAIN BREADS AND ROLLS Any loaf of bread or rolls that can survive on a shelf more than 4 or 5 days is unhealthy. Again, the marketers for these breads want you to think that bread is healthy because it’s wheat bread. Why don’t you just look at the ingredients and see how many grams of fiber there are in wheat bread and while bread. And just look at all the ingredients? If you are going to eat bread, the only bread that is healthy is if you actually grind the grain yourself and let it soak overnight and then you cook it and freeze it to keep it fresh until you eat it. Ezekiel bread and other live sprouted grains breads are found in the freezer section and they are a both healthy. I KNOW THAT BREAD IS A HARD THING FOR BUSY MOMS TO GIVE UP BECAUSE OF MAKING LUNCHES, SO TRY TO REWARD YOUR FAMILY FOR MAKING THE CHANGE. IF THEY MAKE THESE HEALTHY CHANGES YOU WILL CAMP OUT IN THE BACKYARD WITH THEM OR DO THAT THING THAT THEY’VE BEEN BEGGING FOR. MAKE REWARDS A FUN THING…NOT A SWEET THING!!
9. PEANUT BUTTER Peanuts are just not a healthy nut. It always amazes me how the best tasting nut of all isn’t the healthiest. Peanuts are the only nut that grows underground which is why people have such severe allergies to them. Because they grow underground they tend to have a lot of mold on them. In order to get rid of the mold, manufacturers use a lot of chemicals to kill the mold and bugs before they process it. We try to do mostly almond butter in my home. If we do peanut butter is it organic with no sugar in it. Another thing about peanut butter is that most of the popular brands that are super creamy have hydrogenated oils mixed in with the chemically laden peanuts and they add sugar. (So you and your kids will become addicted) ALMOND BUTTER AND CASHEW BUTTERS ARE BOTH DELICIOUS AND SUCH A HEALTHY OPTION FOR PEANUT BUTTER.
10. SHELF JUICES AND JUICE BOXES Lets just get this straight right now. I don’t know how these companies get away with advertising that says juicy juice is 100 percent real juice. Most of these concentrated formulations are made to get you and your family addicted to something that you believe is healthy. If you didn’t make it yourself through a juicer machine, then every healthy enzyme is dead and all vitamins (if there even really are any) have been added. These juices (as they are called) are basically sugary flavored water with something in it, that at some point, may have resembled a fruit. These have no nutritional value and are just marketers ways of getting our families addicted to these sugary substances TRAIN YOUR FAMILY TO DRINK ONLY WATER
(FILTERED OR SPRING…NOT TAP) AND IF A DRINK IS NECESSARY FOR A SICK CHILD, I SUGGEST COCONUT WATER. IT WILL HELP IN EVERY WAY I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU TAKE THE TIME TO EDUCATE YOURSELF ON EACH FOOD ITEM MENTIONED ABOVE. THIS IS A GOOD HABIT TO START ANYWAY.
